#5 Universally Accepted: Ending the Argument
a: generally approved and widely used as an industry standard <an accepted convention>
It doesn't come quickly, nor easily. But when you get there, being accepted as the industry standard means a lot, and comes with considerable responsibility.
Twenty years into the guideline story, the wild west of medicine has been settled by market forces. Look at the landscape by state, or guideline citations in peer review decisions, and the standard bearer is clear.
To quote one of the nation's top Medical Directors (who prefers to work diligently outside the spotlight)-
“There are certainly other references, but ODGs seem to be accepted and understood by a wide variety of folks. I find that your guidelines eliminate the arguments and infighting. It is something everyone can agree on.”
noun good·will \ˌgu̇d-ˈwil\
a: a broad feeling of approval and support : benevolent interest or concern in well-being
b: the advantage that a business has acquired especially through its brands and its good reputation
Like anything truly good, goodwill does not come easily.
Goodwill is earned in years and decades, not minutes or months, by delivering results, time and time again. Under-promising, and over-delivering.
Goodwill in large supply precedes acceptance. Without the former, there cannot be the latter.
So thank you, sincerely, for the vote of confidence, and responsibility. We don't take it lightly. And if we can end a few arguments along the way, all the better.
(Cost-savings as a byproduct of better health and RTW outcomes by facilitating quality care quickly ends a lot of arguments. What is left to fight over?)
With those goals, we'll keep doing what got us here, with evidence-based medicine as a guiding light.
